Outpatient clinic for neurogenetic diseases

Prof. Dr. Ludger Schöls

Genetic diseases occur in all fields of neurology including movement disorders, dementia, peripheral neuropathies, muscle disorders, epilepsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis and brain tumors. Diagnosis in neurogenetic disorders is difficult since (i) genetic diseases are rare, (ii) many different subtypes have to be distinguished and (iii) knowledge is increasing rapidly with many new genes discovered over the last years.
A neurogenetic disorder should be considered if similar symptoms occur in several members of a family or the clinical picture matches a well defined genetic syndrome. The research division for Clinical  Neurogenetics focusses on research in hereditary movement disorders including neurometabolic diseases (e.g. leukodystrophies). The outpatient clinic for neurogenetic diseases is open for consultations from all types of neurological diseases however. In cooperation with the Institute of Medical Genetics we provide genetic diagnosis and genetic counselling.
