For this research project we use stem cells as a gene-delivery vehicle for immunomodulating cytokines in EAE. Since neural and hematopoetic stem cells are able to migrate into areas of inflamed CNS tissue during EAE, this approach combines the regenerating aspects of stem cell therapy with a site-directed antiinflammatory cytokine therapy.
This project is carried out in close collaboration with Dr. med. Nils-Ole Schmidt, Department of Neurosurgery, University Medical Center, Hamburg-Eppendorf and Dr. Ghazaleh Tabatabai, Hertie Institute of Clinical Brain Research, Tübingen. We also currently plan to extend the scope of our research to other disease models, such as stroke.
This work is supported by a Junior Group of the Interdisciplinary Clinical Research Center Tübingen
