Stroke and Neuroprotection

The research focus of our Stroke and Neuroprotection Laboratory is to find new and to optimize existing neuroprotective strategies that can help to minimize brain damage after stroke. Furthermore, we aim to study and characterize molecular mechanisms involved in ischemic-hypoxic damage and reperfusion-reoxygenation-induced neuronal death.

Our goal is to provide translational research with a close link to clinical application.




A decrease in brain temperature by 1°C lowers cerebral oxygen consumption by around 5-10%, and increases cerebral tolerance to ischemic conditions. In addition, hypothermia mediates multimodal neuroprotection by influencing pathways of secondary cell damage. Our project investigates novel methods for rapid and selective induction of cerebral hypothermia and supplemental strategies to enhance neuroprotection.

Spezialambulanz Schlaganfall und Hirngefäße

Diese Spezialambulanz behandelt Patienten nach einem Schlaganfall oder einer Hirnblutung und Patienten mit Erkrankungen der hirnversorgende Blutgefäße.

Die enge Zusammenarbeit mit den Abteilungen Diagnostische und Interventionelle Neuroradiologie, Thorax-, Herz- und Gefäßchirurgie, Neurochirurgie und Kardiologie ermöglicht es uns jeden individuellen Patienten bestmöglich und objektiv zu beraten (z. B. Stent, Carotis-OP, PFO-Verschluss, Vorhofverschlus, Event Recorder). Als neurovaskuläres Studienzentrum bieten wir unseren Patienten auch die Behandlung im Rahmen klinischer Studien an.
