Under the guidance of Prof. Lisa Sevenich, head of the research group “Experimental Neuroonco-Immunology” in Prof. Ghazaleh Tabatabai’s Department of “Neurology and Interdisciplinary Neuro-Oncology”, Anna's scientific work bridges the fields of neuroscience and organic chemistry with innovative research, focusing on anti-cancer drug discovery.
In addition to her research in the natural sciences, the DAREA Award winner is strongly committed to gender equality in STEM subjects. Her award-winning study on the “leaky pipeline” phenomenon refutes the theory that women leave STEM careers due to personal preferences and instead sheds light on structural barriers that prevent women from remaining in top academic positions.
Anna Wolfram is not only the founder of “IG Friedenstaube”, a peer-to-peer initiative recognized by the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency for the promotion of democracy and social education (in cooperation with partners such as UN Women Germany), but also the coordinator of “Frauen mit Format”, a Frankfurt-based network for the promotion of gender equality in science, business and beyond. Internationally, she is involved in the diversity team of the International Younger Chemists Network. Here, she designs webinars on the topics of diversity, equality and inclusion, such as “Women in Chemistry”. She also focuses on diversity topics in her teaching, including in the seminar “Beyond the Baby Question”, which highlights gender bias in STEM.
The DAREA Award
The DAREA Award is an honorary prize awarded by the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. Each year, it recognizes a STEM scientist who has the courage and commitment to promote gender equality within academic or industrial STEM research. A special part of the DAREA Award is a specially designed comic book that creatively depicts the research work and commitment of the award winner. The comic book will be distributed free of charge to schoolchildren and is intended to get them interested in scientific and technical careers. The prize is sponsored by the Equal Opportunities Office of the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences.
Congratulations to Anna Wolfram on this well-deserved award!
