"Paper of the Year Award" 2021 awarded

This year's awardee is Dr. Holger Hengel from the Section "Clinical Neurogenetics". He is honored for his publication on a rare but severe form of epilepsy.

The "Paper of the Year Award" 2021 recognizes the best scientific publication of the year 2020 from the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research. It is endowed with 3000 euros. The prize goes to Dr. Holger Hengel from the Section "Clinical Neurogenetics", headed by Professor Schöls, Department for Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Hengel receives the award for his paper "Loss-of-function mutations in UDP-glucose 6-dehydrogenase cause recessive developmental epileptic encephalopathy," which he published in the journal Nature Communications in 2020. In this work, the physician shows that a specific gene plays an important role in brain development. A gene defect leads to a rare but very severe form of epilepsy.

The award ceremony took place virtually this year.
